When it comes to future housing decisions, retirees who think early come out ahead.
“We were very interested in a unit at Heritage Village and we nearly purchased it but our daughters talked us out of it because they said, ‘Why move twice?’” – Bob Crean, resident of The Watermark at East Hill
MEET BOB AND PAULA CREAN, FROM WATERBURY AND WATERTOWN TO THE WATERMARK AT EAST HILL.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Bob and Paula Crean on Monday, February 1st, 2016. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
Natives of Waterbury, Bob and Paula spent 43 years in the same house in Watertown. Just because they’re physically active in their 70s doesn’t mean they want to take care of two acres or even manage the people who do. Moving from their ten-room home was a big undertaking. Thinking ahead and very carefully, they decided to move one time to the setting that makes sense for them today – and tomorrow. And they’re glad they did. Now, they stay in touch with old friends as they make new ones from all over the country. With their move behind them, they’re free to have fun attending lectures, going to museums and shows and trying new things like Yoga and Tai Chi.
WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY
Moving to the right retirement community today is actually easier than putting it off. Why let your window of opportunity get any smaller? “My husband and I are in our mid-70s now and the longer you procrastinate, the physically harder it’s going to be. To us, a move was inevitable. And the reason we wanted to do it now is that we wanted to get to a community, become acclimated, make new friends and participate for many productive years in good health so we could enjoy ourselves. We did not want to wait till we were so debilitated, if that ever happens, I hope not but we didn’t want to wait until we were too old to really appreciate or enjoy or participate in some place like this. To me, you miss that window of opportunity.” – Paula Crean
FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW
They investigated every area option and thought through every “what if?” “We weighed and measured. As my husband said, we nearly did buy a place in Heritage Village but when we compared the two, we realized that there were so many activities here and you never have to go outside to get to them. Whereas in Heritage Village it’s a lovely condo community and people like it but you have to either get in your car or take a long walk to go to the gym or the pool or this club or that club or whatever. And here there are so many wonderful activities and you never even have to put on your coat.” – Paula Crean
WARM WELCOME HOME
When they moved in August 20, 2015, Bob and Paula felt right at home. Everyone was so accommodating, staff and residents alike. Knowing that care is available on site should they ever need it, they truly do live worry free. “I love not having to cook dinner every night, a big meal. The food here is good and we enjoy very much going to the dining room and sitting with other very pleasant, interesting people and socializing that way every night. That made us feel very at home.” – Paula Crean
